A new cohort of transitioning active-duty service members started their United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) training in Camp Pendleton’s Welding Class 45.
UA VIP is a DOD SkillBridge program created to help active-duty service members complete a stress-free transition from the military to a new civilian career in the pipe trades.
For 118 days, journeymen instructors Jason Culkin and David Ramirez will teach Class 45 students through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training.
Marine Lance Cpl. Alexander Cassolino discovered the UA VIP program when he was looking at programs on the SkillBridge website to help him begin a civilian career.
While there were many programs to choose from, UA VIP stood out the most to Cassolino.
“I wanted to apply for UA VIP because it offers a guaranteed job, nationally recognized certifications and a sufficient length to learn,” he said.
During his time in Class 45, Cassolino anticipates he will learn how to properly cut and grind, each type of welding, as well as trade-specific math and technical skills.
“I hope to successfully complete my apprenticeship and become a journeyman and then eventually a foreman,” Cassolino said.
Marine Lance Cpl. Steven Hart is eager to learn and become more confident in the trade while earning welding certifications.
“I applied for the UA VIP program because of the amazing reviews and recommendations from my family and friends and the direct entry into a Local Union,” Hart said.
Hart is excited to graduate, transition and begin his apprenticeship.
“I want to provide for my family while working in a union with the UA,” Hart said. “I want to become a journeyman and eventually teach my two kids the trade when they grow up.”
Apply for the UA VIP program
After graduating from the UA VIP program and transitioning out of the military, Class 45 graduates will be placed at an agreed-upon location, where they will begin a five-year UA apprenticeship.
As apprentices continue to learn and train, they will earn a livable wage with comprehensive benefits. Apprentices qualify for regular wage increases as their skills grow.
The UA VIP program offers training in welding, HVACR or fire suppression at the following military bases:
- Camp Pendleton (welding)
- Joint Base Lewis-McChord (welding and HVACR)
- Fort Carson (welding)
- Fort Cavazos (welding)
- Camp Lejeune (welding)
- Fort Campbell (welding and fire suppression)
- Naval Station Norfolk (HVACR)
Individuals who are not stationed at one of the military bases that offer the UA VIP program are still encouraged to apply.
