Another class of United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) students completed their fire suppression training at Fort Campbell on Jan. 9.
The UA VIP program is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members transition back to civilian life as smoothly as possible.
Over the last 118 days, students in Fort Campbell Fire Suppression Class 15 learned the basics of installing, inspecting, repairing and maintaining fire sprinkler systems.
Class 15 students had the opportunity to earn various industry-recognized certifications such as Rigging and Signaling, CPVP, Life Operator, Firestop Systems, OSHA 30 and more.
Graduating with these certificates helps VIP graduates stand out from other apprentices on future jobsites.
Journeymen instructors Curtis Amos and Kyle Shrum taught basic fire suppression through hands-on training and classroom instruction.
The UA VIP program offers 118 days of intense training in welding, HVACR and fire suppression at seven military installations across the country:
- Camp Pendleton (welding)
- Joint Base Lewis-McChord (welding and HVACR)
- Fort Carson (welding)
- Fort Cavazos (welding)
- Camp Lejeune (welding)

After transitioning out of the military, VIP graduates are guaranteed direct entry into a DOL-registered UA apprenticeship program at an agreed-upon location.
While working as apprentices, VIP graduates earn good wages and qualify for comprehensive healthcare benefits for themselves and their families.
As apprentices continue to learn the skills of the trade, they will qualify for regular wage increases.
Graduates who complete the apprenticeship program will become journeymen. Reaching journeyman status will open the door to more career growth opportunities.
If you are an active-duty service member who wants to find a rewarding, civilian career after leaving the military, visit the UA VIP program website for more information.
