A new group of transitioning service members who are preparing for a civilian career in the pipe trades began their accelerated training on Jan. 27 in Fort Campbell Fire Suppression Class 16.
During their time in the UA VIP program, Class 16 students will learn the basics of fire suppression through a blended learning style consisting of classroom instruction and hands-on training.
UA VIP is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members smoothly transition from military life to a rewarding civilian career.
Army Staff Sgt. Dylan Chapman did not have experience with a skilled trade prior to the VIP program but was eager to apply because of the guaranteed job placement.
Chapman’s goal for his time in the UA VIP program is to learn as much as he can before he begins his union sprinkler fitter career.
“Once I begin my apprenticeship, I will continue to work hard and stay diligent,” Chapman said. “I want to learn as much as I can and hopefully be an asset to my new team.”
For Army Spc. Omar Perez, joining the UA VIP program was a no-brainer.
Perez was encouraged by friends who graduated from the UA VIP program to apply to help him begin a civilian career after the military.
Once he transitions out of the military and begins his apprenticeship, Perez hopes to master the trade, earn promotions and climb the ranks.
Chapman, Perez and their fellow Class 16 classmates will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications in sprinkler hazard, boom lift, forklift, OSHA safety and more during their time in the UA VIP program.
