
The United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) program Fort Carson Welding Class 30 students have reached the halfway point of their advanced training.
The UA VIP program is a DOD SkillBridge program created to help active-duty service members smoothly transition into a successful civilian career.
After graduating from the program and transitioning out of the military, VIP graduates will be placed in a DOL-registered UA apprenticeship program at an agreed-upon location, with a guaranteed job with a UA signatory contractor.
At this point in their training, Welding Class 30 most students have determined where they will begin their five-year apprenticeship programs.
Army Spc. Drake Dolberry will relocate to Chattanooga, Tenn. to begin his apprenticeship with Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 43.
Army Sgt. Matthew Bunger will move to the Atlanta area to begin his apprenticeship with Plumbers, Pipefitters and HVACR Technicians Local 72.
Some students will stay in Colorado after they graduate and transition out of the military. Others will relocate to various parts of Oregon, Texas, Washington and Virginia to begin their UA apprenticeship training.
During the rest of their time in the UA VIP program, Class 30 students will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications that will help them as they begin their apprenticeships.
The UA VIP program offers accelerated training in welding, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) and fire suppression. The UA VIP program is offered at the following military bases:
- Camp Pendleton (welding)
- Joint Base Lewis-McChord (welding and HVACR)
- Fort Carson (welding)
- Fort Cavazos (welding)
- Camp Lejeune (welding)
- Fort Campbell (welding and fire suppression)
- Naval Station Norfolk (HVACR)

For 118 days, students in the UA VIP program learn the fundamentals of their trade through classroom instruction and hands-on training.
While working as apprentices, UA VIP graduates will earn a livable wage and qualify for full-family medical benefits and retirement benefits, including a pension and a 401K.
After completing their five-year apprenticeship, UA VIP graduates become journeymen, opening up doors to even more career advancement opportunities.
