NEWS AND HAPPENINGS WITH VIP

Take a look at some of the newsworthy items for the VIP program.

Fort Cavazos Welding Class 28 halfway through UA VIP training

Fort Cavazos Welding Class 28 students have reached the halfway point of their advanced training in the UA VIP program.

The UA VIP program is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members smoothly transition into a rewarding civilian career in the pipe trades.

Since Class 28 began in September, these active-duty service members have been preparing to become future union welding apprentices.

Class 28 students will spend the rest of their time in the UA VIP program learning and expanding their welding skills, led by journeymen instructors Chris Slaughter and Anthony Vasquez during classroom instruction and hands-on training.

Recently, Class 28 students learned the agreed-upon UA Local Union location where they will live to start their apprenticeship after transitioning out of the military.

Army Spc. Andres Franco will stay in Texas and begin his apprenticeship training with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 100. Other students will relocate to other states.

Army Spc. Asante Dunham will begin his apprenticeship training with Steamfitters Local 638 in New York City.

Other Class 28 students will move to various locations in Texas, Pennsylvania and Georgia to begin their apprenticeship programs.

What’s next for Class 28

Before Class 28 students graduate, they will learn oxy-fuel cutting, as well as SMAW and GTAW welding on both plate and pipe.

They will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications that they will carry with them to their home Local.

After graduating and transitioning out of the military, Class 28 students will gain direct entry into a UA-registered apprenticeship program, where they will continue to learn and improve their welding skills.

While working as apprentices, Class 28 students will earn a livable wage, along with full-family healthcare and retirement benefits.

Individuals with strong, hands-on problem-solving skills are in high demand and the UA VIP program is dedicated to fulfilling this need. If you are interested in learning more, visit the UA VIP website.
