Joint Base Lewis-McChord Welding Class 32 graduated from the United Association's Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) program on March 5.

After 118 days of intensive training, the class celebrated the completion of their accelerated pre-apprenticeship program, marking the beginning of their transition from military service to promising civilian careers in the pipe trades.

The UA VIP program, a DOD SkillBridge initiative, provides active-duty service members with the skills and certifications needed to seamlessly transition into civilian life. JBLM class 32 1

The welding course at JBLM equips participants with hands-on training, classroom instruction, and industry-recognized certifications, paving the way for careers as UA apprentices.

Journeyman instructor Jeremy Rood commended the graduates for their unwavering dedication and perseverance throughout the program.

“This wasn’t just any course; it was a test of patience, skill and determination,” Rood said. “This journey wasn’t easy; especially with the challenges of the holidays, demanding projects and the ups and downs that tested your patience and perseverance. But through it all, you never stopped giving 100 percent.”

He praised the class's grit and resilience, adding the class overcame many challenges such as learning how to weld in awkward positions and adapting to challenges that would make most people walk away.

“Even when the bend test knocked you down, you got back up, pushed forward, learned from your mistakes, and kept welding, grinding and improving. That determination is what sets you apart,” Rood said.

These VIP graduates now know the basics of proper installation, maintenance and repair of various piping systems.

“Today, you leave this program with more than just a certificate; you leave with the skills, a strong mindset, friendships and grit to succeed in the UA,” Rood said. “I’m incredibly proud of each and every one of you. Weld strong, stay safe, and never stop learning!”
