United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) program Naval Station Norfolk HVAC-R Class 22 students have reached the halfway point of their advanced training.
The UA VIP is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members smoothly transition into a successful civilian career.
After completing the program and transitioning out of the military, VIP graduates will be placed in a DOL-registered UA apprenticeship program at an agreed-upon location.
Many students, like Marine Sgt. Genaro Soto found the UA VIP program to be the perfect solution to lock in a new career after transitioning out of the military.
“I really like how we learn everything in the classroom and then get hands-on training on the things that we learned previously,” Soto said. “I enjoy the program, and I have been learning many things that are always explained thoroughly.”
So far, Soto has earned numerous certificates including CPR, pipe fitting and OSHA. Soto and his fellow Class 22 classmates will have more opportunities to earn additional certificates in the coming weeks.
“The UA VIP is a great opportunity that more service members should look into because it will open many doors,” he said.
Marine Sgt. Timothy Kalinski said his experience in the program has been great, mainly thanks to the instructors.
“The instructors are super helpful, knowledgeable and patient while we continue to learn this new information,” Kalinski said.
Kalinski discovered the UA VIP program through his own research and decided to join because of the great opportunities it provides. He has always enjoyed working with his hands and appreciates that there is always something new to learn.
The UA VIP program stood out to Kalinski because it allows him to learn a trade, continue his education and guarantees a job so he can provide for his family after he transitions out of the military.
“Applying for the VIP program is hands down the smartest and best decision you can make,” Kalinski said. “Nothing can beat the opportunities given to you.”
Soto will begin his apprenticeship with UA Local 421 in North Carolina and Kalinski plans to join UA Local 190 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
What the VIP program can offer you
For 118 days, Naval Station Norfolk HVAC-R Class 22 students will learn the fundamentals of HVAC-R through classroom instruction and hands-on training.
After completing the VIP program and transitioning out of the military, graduates will gain entry into a DOL-registered UA apprenticeship program, where they will continue to learn and improve their skills as HVAC-R technicians.
While working as apprentices, VIP graduates earn competitive wages and quickly become eligible for comprehensive health insurance for themselves and their whole families.
Eventually, apprentices will top out and become journeymen, which opens up a variety of career paths with further advancement.
Any active-duty service member planning to transition from the military in the next six months is encouraged to explore the possibilities the UA VIP program offers. Visit our website for more information.
