Naval Station Norfolk HVACR Class 23 students are officially halfway through their accelerated training in the UA VIP program.
During their time in the program, Class 23 students learn the fundamentals of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration through classroom instruction and hands-on training.
The UA VIP program is a DOD SkillBridge program, designed to help active-duty service members transition from the military to civilian life with minimal stress.
UA VIP graduates are guaranteed a job with a UA signatory contractor at an agreed-upon location after they transition out of the military.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Anfernee Burke called his adjustment to being in a classroom setting “seamless” and credited Instructor Nastassia Leggett for being helpful and accommodating.
“The program has been going well,” Burke said. “My time within the class has been productive, informative and enjoyable.”
So far, Burke and his classmates have learned the different types of HVAC systems and refrigerants and how to cut with and handle a torch.
“My favorite part of the program so far has been passing the EPA 608 exam as I was extremely nervous about it despite how much we were prepared,” Burke said.
Burke chose the UA VIP program over other SkillBridge programs because it provides graduates with a stable career with many opportunities to grow.
All of the students in Class 23 agree that Leggett’s instruction and devotion to the class is making their time in the program incredibly rewarding and valuable.
Burke recently learned will begin his UA apprenticeship at Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 110 in Norfolk, Va., after he graduates and transfers out of the military.
Other Class 23 students will relocate to various parts of Nevada, Illinois, Texas and California for their UA apprenticeships.
What’s in store for Class 23 students
During the second half of their on-base training, Class 23 students will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications and more before they graduate on Dec. 12.
After Class 23 students graduate and transition out of the military, they will receive good hourly wages and high-quality healthcare as United Association apprentices.
When these graduates complete their apprenticeships, they will become journeymen which will open more opportunities for career advancement.
The UA VIP program offers training in welding, HVACR and fire suppression at the following seven military installations:
- Camp Pendleton
- Joint Base Lewis-McChord
- Fort Carson
