Naval Station Norfolk HVACR Class 24 hits halfway mark in UA VIP program

Naval Station Norfolk

The UA VIP students in Naval Station Norfolk HVACR Class 24 are officially halfway through their accelerated training.

UA VIP is a DOD SkillBridge program designed to help active-duty service members transition from the military into civilian life with guaranteed job placement.

At this point in their training, Class 24 students have started the process of selecting what UA Local Union they will join and begin their DOL-registered UA apprenticeship.

Class 24 is taught by journeyman welder Nastassia Leggett, who teaches the 118-day class through hands-on training and classroom education.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Aidan Palmer said he has adjusted well and likes the size of the class.

“The program is fast-paced but all the information we learn is useful,” Palmer said. “Our instructor does a very good job at teaching and is quite knowledgeable. It is obvious that she cares about the subject matter.”

Palmer plans to relocate to Michigan where he will begin his apprenticeship with UA Local 174.

Marine Sgt. Allan Van Reijsen chose the UA VIP program because it teaches an interesting trade and offers guaranteed job placement.

“I wanted a sense of being a part of a team and community because in the military you build strong bonds with everyone you work with,” he said.

Van Reijsen will begin his apprenticeship with UA Local 51 in Rhode Island after he graduates and transitions out of the military.

Other Class 24 students will begin their apprenticeships with various UA Locals in Virginia, Indiana and Missouri.

A career with the UA

After completing the UA VIP program and transitioning out of the military, Class 24 students will join a UA-registered apprenticeship program and begin working for a UA signatory contractor.

UA VIP graduates will earn a livable wage and qualify for full-family medical benefits and retirement benefits, including a pension and a 401K while working as apprentices.

The work HVACR technicians perform is essential for the smooth operation of businesses, the comfort of individuals and the safety of healthcare facilities and other buildings.

Anyone in their last six months of military service who is still looking for job opportunities is encouraged to apply for the UA VIP program today.
